The Nespresso machine changed how millions of people make coffee at home. One button, thirty seconds, and you have an espresso in hand. No grinder, no scale, no technique required. It is arguably the most successful coffee innovation of the last three decades.
But here is the thing most capsule drinkers never consider: the machine is just a brewing device. What actually determines the taste in your cup is the coffee sealed inside that small aluminum or plastic shell. And the gap between a standard supermarket pod and a specialty-grade compatible capsule is enormous — comparable to the difference between a mass-produced table wine and a single-vineyard bottle from a small producer.
If you own a Nespresso machine and care about what you drink, this guide will show you exactly what separates standard pods from specialty capsules — and why the difference is worth every centime.
What Makes a Capsule “Specialty”?
The term “specialty coffee” is not marketing language. It is a grading standard maintained by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). To qualify as specialty, green coffee beans must score 84 points or above out of 100 on a standardized cupping evaluation. Trained Q Graders assess aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, sweetness, clean cup, uniformity, and overall impression.
Only about 5–8% of global coffee production meets this threshold. The rest — what the industry calls “commodity coffee” — typically scores between 60 and 75 points and is traded in bulk on commodity exchanges.
When we say our Nespresso-compatible capsules are specialty grade, we mean every batch meets four criteria:
- SCA score of 84+ — verified through professional cupping by our roasting partner
- Single-origin sourcing — each capsule contains beans from one country, one region, often one farm
- Roast-to-order freshness — roasted in small batches, sealed within days of roasting
- Full traceability — we can tell you exactly where your coffee was grown, processed, and roasted

Standard vs. Specialty Capsules: A Direct Comparison
The differences become stark when you place them side by side:
| Factor | Standard Nespresso Pods | Specialty Capsules (BRÜ) |
|---|---|---|
| Bean quality | Commodity blend, 60–75 SCA | Single-origin, 84+ SCA score |
| Sourcing | Mass-market, multiple origins blended | Traceable single farms and cooperatives |
| Roast date | Unknown, potentially months old | Roasted within weeks, sealed fresh |
| Flavor profile | Consistent, mild, designed for broad appeal | Complex, origin-specific, nuanced |
| Price per capsule | CHF 0.45–0.55 | CHF 1.00 |
| Variety | Intensity numbers (5, 8, 12) | Named origins with tasting notes |
| Packaging | Aluminum (recyclable via Nespresso program) | Compostable and recyclable options |
| Transparency | Limited origin information | Farm, region, altitude, and process disclosed |
The intensity number on standard Nespresso pods — that scale from 1 to 13 — measures roast darkness and body, not quality. A capsule rated “intensity 12” is not better than one rated “5.” It is simply darker roasted, which often masks the defects common in lower-grade beans. Specialty capsules do not need to hide behind dark roasts because the underlying coffee is good enough to shine at lighter profiles.
Taste Profiles: Our Four Capsule Varieties
Each of our Nespresso-compatible capsules showcases a different origin and flavor character. Here is what to expect:
Ethiopia – Fig, Apricot, Peach
Ethiopian coffees are where it all began — coffee was born in the forests of Ethiopia, and the beans from this origin still carry that wild, untamed character. Our Ethiopia capsule delivers a unique fruity taste with predominant fig and stone fruit notes. The acidity is balanced and bright, the body is medium, and the aftertaste lingers with fruity sweetness. This is the capsule for anyone who wants to experience what specialty coffee can truly taste like — it is a world away from anything on the supermarket shelf. Intensity: 6/10.
Colombia – Red Apple, Cane Sugar, Caramel
Colombia is our crowd-pleaser. The flavor profile hits that perfect intersection of familiar and interesting: crisp red apple sweetness meets rich caramel, with cane sugar rounding out the finish. If you are introducing someone to specialty coffee or looking for a capsule the entire household will enjoy, start here. It works beautifully as a straight espresso and holds its own with a splash of milk. This is the capsule that converts people.
Brazil – Milk Chocolate, Toffee, Biscuit
Our Brazil is the daily driver — the capsule you reach for every morning without thinking twice. Rich milk chocolate and toffee dominate the profile, with a biscuity finish that feels like comfort in a cup. The acidity is low and the body is full, making it the most approachable option in our range. If you love your coffee smooth, sweet, and uncomplicated, this is your capsule. It is also superb as a base for a latte or cappuccino.
Decaf – Milk Chocolate, Toffee, Roasted Hazelnut
Decaf does not mean flavor-free. Our organic decaf uses a gentle decaffeination process that removes 97% or more of the caffeine while preserving the coffee’s character. The result: rich milk chocolate, toffee sweetness, and roasted hazelnut in a solid-bodied cup that tastes like it has no business being decaf. Enjoy it any time of the day — after dinner, as an afternoon pick-me-up, or as a late-evening ritual. Intensity: 6/10.

The Price Question: Is CHF 1.00 Per Capsule Worth It?
Let us address the obvious: our capsules cost roughly twice what a standard Nespresso pod costs. At CHF 1.00 per capsule versus CHF 0.45–0.55, the price gap is real. But consider what you are actually comparing.
A single espresso at a café in Basel costs CHF 4.00–5.50. A specialty espresso at a third-wave coffee shop runs CHF 5.00–6.00. Our capsules deliver single-origin, specialty-grade espresso for CHF 1.00 — roughly one-fifth the price of buying the same quality at a café.
Put differently: if you drink two espressos per day, upgrading from standard pods to our specialty capsules costs you about CHF 1.00 extra per day — CHF 30 per month. That is less than a single brunch out. For that modest difference, every cup you drink at home goes from forgettable to genuinely excellent.
The real question is not “can I afford specialty capsules?” It is “why would I put commodity coffee into a perfectly good machine when the upgrade costs a franc a day?”
How We Make Them: Our Partnership with Dabov Specialty Coffee
We do not roast our own capsules in-house. Instead, we partner with Dabov Specialty Coffee (dabov.eu), a multi-award-winning specialty roaster with decades of experience sourcing and roasting exceptional single-origin coffees. This partnership means our capsules benefit from their established relationships with farmers across Ethiopia, Colombia, and Brazil, their rigorous quality control at the cupping table, and their precision roasting on equipment designed for small-batch specialty production.
The process matters: beans are roasted in small batches to a profile specifically designed for each origin. They are ground and sealed into capsules within days — not weeks or months — of roasting. This short window between roast and seal is critical. Coffee is at its peak flavor roughly 7–21 days after roasting. After that, oxidation steadily degrades the aromatic compounds that give specialty coffee its complexity. Sealing freshly roasted coffee in an airtight capsule effectively pauses that clock, locking in the aromatics until you puncture the seal in your machine.
By contrast, mass-market capsule producers typically roast months in advance and rely on nitrogen flushing and heavy packaging to maintain a baseline of freshness. The coffee is “not stale,” but it was never at its peak when it was sealed.
Environmental Considerations
No article about coffee capsules would be complete without addressing the environmental question. Standard Nespresso capsules are made from aluminum, which is technically infinitely recyclable — but only if consumers return them through Nespresso’s recycling program. Studies estimate that a significant percentage end up in general waste, where the aluminum is lost to landfill.
Our capsules use materials selected for easier end-of-life processing. We are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of single-serve coffee without asking you to sacrifice quality or convenience. As materials science evolves, we continuously evaluate better options — the goal is a capsule that delivers specialty coffee and genuinely disappears after use.
Whatever capsule system you choose, the single most impactful environmental choice you can make is buying coffee from producers who invest in sustainable farming. Specialty coffee’s premium pricing allows farmers to maintain environmentally sound practices that commodity pricing cannot support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your capsules compatible with all Nespresso machines?
Yes. Our capsules are compatible with all Nespresso Original Line machines, including models from Nespresso, DeLonghi, Krups, and Breville that use the Original capsule format. They are not compatible with Nespresso Vertuo machines, which use a different barcode-based system. If your machine takes the standard small capsule shape, ours will work.
How many capsules come in a box?
Each box contains 10 capsules. At CHF 10.00 per box, that is CHF 1.00 per capsule. We recommend trying all four origins to find your favorite — or keeping a rotation for different moods and times of day. Browse the full capsule collection.
How long do the capsules stay fresh?
Each capsule is individually sealed immediately after grinding to lock in freshness. Properly stored in a cool, dry place, they maintain optimal flavor for up to 12 months from the production date. That said, specialty coffee is best enjoyed sooner rather than later — we roast in small batches specifically so you receive the freshest possible product.
Can I subscribe for regular delivery?
We are currently evaluating subscription options. For now, you can order directly through our online shop with delivery across Switzerland. Follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when subscriptions launch.

The Bottom Line
Your Nespresso machine is capable of producing genuinely excellent coffee. The limiting factor has never been the hardware — it is what goes inside it. Standard pods give you convenience and consistency, but they cap your experience at commodity-level coffee. Specialty capsules unlock what the machine can actually do: deliver complex, traceable, freshly roasted single-origin espresso at a fraction of café prices.
The difference between a CHF 0.50 pod and a CHF 1.00 capsule is not just fifty centimes. It is the difference between coffee that is merely acceptable and coffee that is genuinely worth savoring.
